日本が誇るデニムの聖地、岡山県倉敷市・児島（Kojima, Okayama）。この地は世界中のデニムブランドから注目を集める「メイド・イン・ジャパン」デニムの発祥地として知られています。今回、私たちレイズラボ株式会社（RaiseLab Co.,Ltd.）は、旧式の力織機（シャトル織機）を使ったデニム生地工場を取材しました。

力織機が生み出す、唯一無二の風合い

The Authentic Texture Created by Shuttle Looms

現代のエアジェット織機とは異なり、旧式の力織機はゆっくりと、丁寧に糸を打ち込んでいきます。そのため、生地に余分なテンションがかからず、柔らかさと立体感のあるデニムが生まれます。織りのムラや節が残ることで、穿き込むほどに豊かな表情へと変化し、まるでヴィンテージのような奥深い味わいが楽しめます。

Unlike modern high-speed looms, shuttle looms weave denim slowly, allowing the yarn to retain its natural tension.This process creates a soft, three-dimensional texture — the essence of authentic Japanese selvedge denim.Each imperfection becomes a mark of individuality, aging beautifully over time.

児島の工場では、熟練の職人たちが古い織機を一台一台メンテナンスしながら、丁寧に生地を織り上げています。織機のリズムが響く工場の中には、日本のものづくり文化が脈々と息づいていました。

In the factory, skilled artisans maintain and operate each vintage loom by hand.The rhythmic sound of weaving echoes through the workshop — a living testament to Japan’s dedication to craftsmanship and quality.
